How we study it

Water systems carry both resource and risk. Center research examines supply, treatment and reuse alongside stormwater and flooding, connecting infrastructure decisions to energy use, climate exposure and the communities that depend on the network.

  1. Step 01 · Boundary

    Water supply and treatment are commonly evaluated on water quality and volume. A systems boundary adds the energy required to move and treat it.

  2. Step 02 · Shift

    Higher levels of treatment or longer conveyance raise energy demand, linking water decisions back to the energy system.

  3. Step 03 · Consequence

    Water and energy planning perform better when analyzed as one interdependent system than as two separate ones.
